Dixie Thompson was employed at Sacred Heart Hospital as a Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery for fifteen years. She attended Emory University for certification as a Gynecologic/Obstetric Nurse Practitioner and was subsequently Board Certified as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. She has been in practice for fifteen years. She was awarded Inspiring Woman of 2009 in December by women of inspiration. She is qualified to provide a broad spectrum of services, including well woman exams, family planning, evaluation and management of problems, referral as appropriate, menopausal management, health and nutrition counseling, disease screening and orders for diagnostic testing.
The motivation for the development of the clinic came from observing the increasing numbers of people losing their insurance, or experiencing changes in their plans with high deductibles, "health savings accounts", or higher out of pocket expenses. Combined with the severe economic stresses of the last year, this has resulted in polls showing that twenty percent of Americans have not gotten the care they need because of inablity to pay. Many people are also unable to miss work or school for appointments.
